Why People Send a Prayer to the Stone of Anointing

The Stone of Anointing stands just inside the entrance of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. It is where Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus laid the body of Christ after the Crucifixion — washing Him, wrapping Him in linen, preparing Him for burial with myrrh and aloes. It is a stone of tender love expressed in the darkest moment.

✅ For healing

Pilgrims for centuries have knelt at this stone asking for healing — for themselves, for family, for those whose bodies are failing. A prayer placed here carries that same intention into one of Christianity's most prayed-over places.

✅ For love and family

The act commemorated at this stone was one of devoted love — tending to someone precious when there was no certainty about what came next. A prayer for a marriage, a child, a family facing difficulty belongs here.

✅ For intercession

Many prayers placed at the Stone of Anointing are not for the person submitting them but for someone else — a friend, a parent, a colleague carrying something heavy. This stone was itself an act of intercession — caring for another in their most vulnerable moment.

✅ For those carrying grief

The Stone of Anointing has always been the place of mourning — where hands cared for a broken body when most had already fled. A prayer placed here for someone who has died, or for those walking alongside a loved one through illness, finds its natural home at this stone.
