Olive Wood Jersualem Cross from the Holy Land

The Jerusalem cross — sometimes called the Crusader's cross or the Pilgrim's cross — carries a meaning all its own. The large central cross surrounded by four smaller ones has long been read as the four Gospels going out into the world, or as the wounds of Christ.

Few Christian symbols feel so tied to a place, or to the institutions that have grown up around it. The design is the official emblem of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem and the Order of the Holy Sepulchre, and Franciscan friars use it across the Holy Land to represent the Passion of Christ. In the Old City you'll find it engraved into stone walls and set above the doors of Christian institutions, where it's often known simply as the Holy Land Cross.

Each cross in this collection is hand-carved from olive wood by artisans working close to those same streets and churches. Some designs include mother-of-pearl detail at the centre; others rely on the wood alone. It remains one of the most lasting Christian gifts to bring back — or send — to someone who has made the journey or hopes to one day.

FAQs About Olive Wood Jerusalem Cross

What do the five crosses on a Jerusalem cross represent?

The most common reading is that the four small crosses stand for the four Gospels going out to the four corners of the earth, with the central cross representing Christ. Others see them as His five wounds. Both interpretations have lived alongside each other for centuries.

Is the Jerusalem cross a Catholic or Orthodox symbol?

Both. The design predates the divisions of the Church and is worn across traditions — especially by anyone connected personally to the Holy Land.

Are these crosses connected to the actual city of Jerusalem?

They're carved in Bethlehem, a short distance from Jerusalem, by artisans who live and work in the region.

Can I gift this for a pilgrimage or confirmation?

It's one of the most common pilgrim gifts there is. Confirmations, baptisms, and ordinations are also fitting occasions.

Why does olive wood vary in colour and grain?

The variation comes from how olive trees grow — slowly, irregularly, with hard knots and unpredictable grain patterns. It's the same reason no two pieces ever look alike.

Can these crosses be displayed on a wall or an altar?

Some crosses are wall-only, others come with a base. The product description for each design specifies which.
