Prayers Before Surgery for Patients and Loved Ones

Facing surgery can stir up a great deal at once: hope, fear, practical worries, and the strange feeling of placing yourself in someone else's care. Whether you are the patient or someone who loves them, you may not know what to say to God right now. This section of our Christian Prayer Library gathers prayers for the moments around an operation, from the night before to the first days of recovery.

Pray them as they are, shorten them, or let them lead you into your own words. God hears all of it.

Christian Prayers Before, During and After Surgery

A Short Prayer Before Surgery

Lord, I am about to go into surgery, and I place myself in your hands. Be with me in the operating room and with every person caring for me. Guide their hands and their judgement. Where my heart is unsettled, let it rest in you. Whatever the hours ahead hold, I belong to you. Amen.

Scripture reference:
Psalm 31:14–15 — “But I trust in You, O LORD; I say, ‘You are my God.’ My times are in Your hands.”

Prayer for the Night Before an Operation

Father, the house is quiet, and my mind is not. Tomorrow feels very large tonight. You know the questions I keep turning over and the fears I have not said aloud. I do not need to pretend with you. Take what I cannot settle and keep it until morning. Let me sleep if I can, and if I cannot, remind me that I am not awake alone. Amen.

Scripture reference:
Psalm 56:3 — “When I am afraid, I put my trust in You.”

A Very Short Prayer as Anaesthesia Begins

Jesus, I am yours. Keep me in your care while I sleep. You are with me now and always. Amen.

Scripture reference:
Psalm 4:8 — “I will lie down and sleep in peace, for You alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.”

Prayer for Someone You Love Undergoing Surgery

Lord, I have done all I can for [Name], and now I have to let go of their hand at the door. You can go where I cannot. Stay beside them through every minute of this operation, and work through the skill of everyone caring for them. Bring [Name] through, according to your loving will. And hold me too, until I can see them again. Amen.

Scripture reference:
Isaiah 41:10 — “Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will surely help you; I will uphold you with My right hand of righteousness.”

Prayer for a Child Undergoing Surgery

Good Shepherd, my child is so small for something so big. You know how frightened [Name] is, and how frightened I am. Gather my child into your arms, the way your word describes you carrying the lambs. Comfort them in the rooms where I am not allowed to follow. Give the doctors and nurses patience and gentleness with a little one. Help me stay calm for my child, and let [Name] sense your love in every voice and touch around them. Amen.

Scripture reference:
Isaiah 40:11 — “He tends His flock like a shepherd; He gathers the lambs in His arms and carries them close to His heart.”

Prayer for Surgeons, Nurses and the Medical Team

Lord of all wisdom, thank you for the people who will care for us today: the surgeon, the anaesthetist, the nurses, and everyone whose name we will never know. Their knowledge and skill are gifts, and we are grateful for them. Keep them alert and focused. Help them communicate clearly with one another, notice what needs noticing, and make good decisions under pressure. Bless their work, and give them rest when their long day is done. Amen.

Scripture reference:
Exodus 31:3 — Of the craftsman Bezalel, God says: “I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, ability, and knowledge in all kinds of craftsmanship.”

Prayer for Family Waiting During Surgery

Lord, the clock is moving slowly, and we keep checking our phones. There is nothing more we can do now except wait, so we wait with you. Be with us in this room. Keep us patient and kind with one another while we are tired and on edge. When the news comes, give us grace to receive it together, whatever it is. Until then, hold us close. Amen.

Scripture reference:
Psalm 27:14 — “Wait patiently for the LORD; be strong and courageous. Wait patiently for the LORD!”

Prayer of Thanksgiving and Strength After Surgery

Thank you, Lord, for bringing me through the operation and for every person who cared for me. Now the slower work of recovery begins. On days when progress feels small, give me patience with my body and honesty about how I feel, so that I ask for the help I need. Teach me to receive care without guilt. Each morning, let me find your mercy waiting for me again. Amen.

Scripture reference:
Lamentations 3:22–23 — “Because of the loving devotion of the LORD we are not consumed, for His mercies never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness!”
