Prayers for Home Blessing and a New Home

A home is more than walls and a roof. It is where we eat and argue, rest and recover, welcome friends and lock the door at night. Christians have long asked God's blessing on the places they live: on moving day, at the start of a new year, or simply when a house needs peace. This section of our Christian Prayer Library gathers prayers for blessing your home, room by room.

Pray them alone or together as a household. If you would like a priest or minister to bless your home, ask at your parish.

Christian Prayers to Bless Your Home and Household

A Short Prayer to Bless Your Home

Lord God, bless this home and everyone who lives here. Be the unseen guest at our table and the quiet presence in every room. Let what is said here be honest and kind, and let what is done here be done in love. Keep us safe under this roof, and make this a place where your peace is at home. Amen.

Scripture reference:
Luke 10:5 — “Whatever house you enter, begin by saying, ‘Peace to this house.’”

Blessing for a New Home

Father, we stand in this new home among boxes and bare walls, grateful and a little overwhelmed. Thank you for bringing us here. Before we fill these rooms with furniture, we fill them with prayer. Bless the work of settling in, the neighbours we have not yet met, and the memories we have not yet made. From this day on, let this house belong to you. Amen.

Scripture reference:
Joshua 24:15 — “As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD!”

A Room-by-Room House Blessing

Walk through your home and pray each line in the room it names. Leave out what does not apply, and add your own.

At the front door. Lord, bless all who come and go through this door. Let it open in welcome and close in safety.

In the kitchen. Lord, bless the hands that cook here and the food prepared in this place. Let no one leave our table hungry.

In the living room. Lord, bless our conversations, our laughter and our rest. Make this a room where everyone can be at ease.

In a bedroom. Lord, give peaceful sleep to whoever rests here, and comfort in the night when sleep will not come.

In a child's room. Lord, watch over the child who sleeps here. Let them grow up knowing they are loved by you and by us.

Where we work or study. Lord, bless the work done here. Give focus, patience and good sense to whoever sits at this desk. Amen.

Scripture reference:
Proverbs 24:3–4 — “By wisdom a house is built and by understanding it is established; through knowledge its rooms are filled with every precious and beautiful treasure.”

A Very Short Prayer at the Door

Lord, as I go out through this door, go with me, and keep this house while I am away. Bring me home safely. Amen.

Scripture reference:
Psalm 121:8 — “The LORD will watch over your coming and going, both now and forevermore.”

Prayer for Peace in the Home

Lord, our home has been tense lately. Voices have been raised, doors have been closed, and some of us have stopped talking. You see each of us more clearly than we see one another. Soften what has hardened. Give us the humility to apologise first and the grace to forgive without keeping score. Let peace come back into these rooms, one honest conversation at a time. Amen.

Scripture reference:
Proverbs 17:1 — “Better a dry morsel in quietness than a house full of feasting with strife.”

Prayer for Guests and Hospitality

Lord Jesus, you were welcomed into the homes of friends and strangers, and you welcomed everyone to your table. Make this house a place of open doors. Help us notice who is lonely, who is new, and who has nowhere else to go. When guests arrive, let them find more than a meal here; let them find a kindness that comes from you. Amen.

Scripture reference:
Hebrews 13:2 — “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it.”

Visit This Dwelling: A Night Prayer from Compline

This prayer has long been said at Compline, the Church's last prayer before sleep, and it fits naturally at the end of a day at home. The English here is a new translation from the Latin made for this page.

Visit this dwelling, we pray, O Lord, and drive far from it every snare of the enemy. Let your holy angels live here and keep us in peace, and may your blessing be upon us always. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Scripture reference:
Psalm 91:11 — “For He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.”

Epiphany House Blessing

On or near the feast of the Epiphany (6 January), many Catholic families write the new year over the front door in chalk, for example 20 + C + M + B + 27. The letters recall the traditional names of the three Magi, Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar, and also begin the Latin words Christus mansionem benedicat, “May Christ bless this house.” The crosses stand for Christ. Many parishes bless chalk for the purpose. The prayer below was written for this page.

Lord Jesus, the Magi followed the star until they found you in a house in Bethlehem. As we mark our door at the start of this year, come into our home as you came into theirs. Bless everyone who lives here and everyone who visits. Let this house be a place where people find you, and keep us in your care through every day of the year ahead. Amen.

Scripture reference:
Matthew 2:11 — “On coming to the house, they saw the Child with His mother Mary, and they fell down and worshiped Him.”

Prayer When Leaving a Home

Lord, today I close this door for the last time. Thank you for everything this place has held: the ordinary days, the celebrations, the hard seasons we came through. Part of my life stays in these rooms, and that is all right. Bless whoever lives here next. And as I go, go with me, so that wherever I live, I am still at home with you. Amen.

Scripture reference:
Genesis 28:15 — “Look, I am with you, and I will watch over you wherever you go.”

Apart from the Compline prayer, the prayers on this page are original prayers written for the Piece of Holy Land Christian Prayer Library. Scripture quotations are taken from the Berean Standard Bible (BSB), which is in the public domain.
