Prayers for Caregivers and Carers

Caring for someone you love is a quiet kind of faithfulness. It can mean early mornings and broken nights, appointments and paperwork, tenderness and frustration, often all in the same day. This section of our Christian Prayer Library gathers prayers for caregivers: for those caring for a parent, a husband or wife, or a child at home, and for those who care for others as their work.

If you are near the end of your strength, please also talk to your doctor or a caregiver support service. Asking for help is not a failure.

Christian Prayers for Caregivers and Those Who Care

A Short Prayer for Caregivers

Lord, you know how much I give each day, and how little of it anyone sees. Thank you for the person I care for, even on the hard days. Give me patience for the slow moments, gentleness for the difficult ones, and enough strength for today. When I have nothing left, carry us both. Amen.

Scripture reference:
Matthew 11:28 — “Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

A Very Short Prayer When I Am Exhausted

Lord, I am so tired. Hold me up for one more hour, and then give me rest. Amen.

Scripture reference:
Isaiah 40:29 — “He gives power to the faint and increases the strength of the weak.”

Prayer for Caring for an Ageing Parent

Father, the one who once cared for me now needs my care. Some days the change feels strange and sad, and I grieve the parent they used to be. Help me honour them in small things: the patience of a slow walk, the dignity of a gentle word, the familiar story heard once more. Give me grace for this season, and let us both feel your love in it. Amen.

Scripture reference:
Ruth 1:16 — Ruth to Naomi, her widowed mother-in-law: “For wherever you go, I will go, and wherever you live, I will live; your people will be my people, and your God will be my God.”

Prayer for Caring for a Husband or Wife

Lord, when we promised to love each other in sickness and in health, we did not know what sickness would ask of us. Now I am my spouse's caregiver as well as their partner. Help me hold on to both: the practical care and the love beneath it. Let us still laugh together, still hold hands, still belong to each other. Strengthen us both. Amen.

Scripture reference:
Ecclesiastes 4:10 — “For if one falls down, his companion can lift him up; but pity the one who falls without another to help him up!”

Prayer for Parents Caring for a Sick or Disabled Child

Lord, I love my child more than I can say, and caring for them takes everything I have. You see the medicines, the appointments, the nights beside the bed, and the worries no one else hears. Give me strength and tenderness, and help me notice the joy that is also here. Surround my child with people who see them, not only their condition. Amen.

Scripture reference:
Isaiah 66:13 — “As a mother comforts her son, so will I comfort you.”

Prayer When Caring for Someone with Dementia

Lord, the person I love is slowly slipping away from me, and some days they do not know my name. It breaks my heart. Help me love them as they are today, not only as they were. Give me patience when the same question comes again, and calm when they are frightened or confused. Even when they forget me, you never forget either of us. Amen.

Scripture reference:
Isaiah 49:15–16 — “Can a woman forget her nursing child, or lack compassion for the son of her womb? … I will not forget you! Behold, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands.”

Prayer When I Lose My Patience

Lord, I snapped again today, and I am ashamed. I was tired, and I said things I did not mean. Forgive me, and help me forgive myself. Give me the humility to apologise and the grace to begin again tomorrow. You know how I am made, and you are gentle with me. Teach me to be gentle too. Amen.

Scripture reference:
Psalm 103:14 — “For He knows our frame; He is mindful that we are dust.”

Prayer for Nurses and Care Workers

Lord, bless all who care for the sick and the elderly as their daily work: nurses, care workers, home aides and hospice staff. Their shifts are long, and much of what they do goes unseen. Protect them from exhaustion and from hardness of heart. Let them know that every act of care they give is done for you. Amen.

Scripture reference:
Matthew 25:36 — “I was sick and you looked after Me.”

Prayer for the Humility to Accept Help

Lord, I keep telling myself I can manage alone, but I cannot. Give me the humility to ask for help, and to accept it when it is offered. Send people who can share the load: family, friends, neighbours and professionals. And when someone else takes over for a while, let me rest without guilt. Amen.

Scripture reference:
Exodus 18:18 — Jethro warns Moses: “Surely you and these people with you will wear yourselves out, because the task is too heavy for you. You cannot handle it alone.”

Prayer When Care Must Change

Lord, I have come to a decision I hoped I would never have to make. I can no longer give [Name] all the care they need, and others will now take over. I feel relief and guilt at the same time. Bless the people who will care for them now. Help [Name] feel safe in a new place, and help me keep loving them in new ways. Amen.

Scripture reference:
John 19:27 — From the cross, Jesus entrusts his mother to his friend: “Then He said to the disciple, ‘Here is your mother.’ So from that hour, this disciple took her into his home.”

The prayers on this page are original prayers written for the Piece of Holy Land Christian Prayer Library. Where you see [Name], use the name of the person you care for. Scripture quotations are taken from the Berean Standard Bible (BSB), which is in the public domain.
