Prayers for Pregnancy and a Safe Childbirth
Pregnancy is a season of wonder and waiting, and often of worry too. A new life is growing, plans are changing, and much of what happens is out of your hands. This section of our Christian Prayer Library gathers prayers for every stage, from the first weeks to labour and the first days with your baby, for mothers, fathers and those who care for them.
The last prayer on this page is for parents whose pregnancy has ended in loss. If that is you, we are so sorry, and you are welcome here.
Christian Prayers for Pregnancy, Labour and New Birth
A Short Prayer During Pregnancy
Lord, you are knitting this child together within me, and I am only beginning to understand the wonder of it. Watch over my baby and my body through every week ahead. Give me rest when I am tired, calm when I worry, and joy in the small signs of life. This child is yours before they are mine. Amen.
Scripture reference:
Psalm 139:13 — “For You formed my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother's womb.”
A Very Short Prayer When the Baby Moves
Thank you, Lord, for this little sign of life. Keep my baby safe, and keep us both in your love. Amen.
Scripture reference:
Luke 1:44 — Elizabeth to Mary: “For as soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy.”
Prayer for a Healthy Pregnancy and Those Who Care for Us
Father, I ask you for a healthy pregnancy and a safe birth. Bless the doctors, midwives and nurses who are caring for us. Give them wisdom at every appointment and skill at the moment of birth. Help me listen to their advice with patience, and speak up when something does not feel right. Whatever comes, surround us with good care and with your love. Amen.
Scripture reference:
Jeremiah 1:5 — “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I set you apart.”
Prayer When You Are Worried About Your Pregnancy
Lord, I am waiting for results, and my mind keeps running ahead to the worst. You already know what I do not. Hold my child safe, and hold me steady while I wait. If the news is good, let me thank you. If it is hard, do not let me face it alone. I place this worry in your hands. Amen.
Scripture reference:
1 Peter 5:7 — “Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.”
Prayer for a Father-to-Be
Lord, I am about to become a father, and I feel both proud and unprepared. Teach me to support the mother of my child through every tiring day and sleepless night. Make me patient, steady and kind. Like Joseph, help me trust you when I do not understand everything, and give me the courage to love this child well. Amen.
Scripture reference:
Matthew 1:24 — “When Joseph woke up, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and embraced Mary as his wife.”
Prayer as Labour Begins
Lord, the time has come. I am excited and afraid, and the pain is real. Stay close to me through every contraction and every long hour. Give strength to my body and calm to my mind. Guide the hands of everyone helping this child into the world, and bring my baby safely into my arms. Amen.
Scripture reference:
John 16:21 — “A woman has pain in childbirth because her time has come; but when she brings forth her child, she forgets her anguish …”
The Hail Mary
The Hail Mary is a natural prayer for expectant mothers, because its words come from the Gospel greetings of the angel Gabriel and of Elizabeth, who was herself expecting a child. This is the traditional Catholic form, as printed in the Baltimore Catechism of 1885.
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
Scripture reference:
Luke 1:42 — Elizabeth, herself expecting a child, greets Mary: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!”
Prayer to St Gerard Majella for Expectant Mothers
St Gerard Majella (1726–1755) was an Italian Redemptorist brother, canonised in 1904, whose feast falls on 16 October. Catholics honour him as a patron of expectant mothers. The prayer below was written for this page.
Saint Gerard, you trusted God through poverty and illness, and served others with a joyful heart. Pray for me and for the child I am carrying. Ask the Lord to keep us safe through pregnancy and birth, and to give me courage when I am afraid. May my child grow up to know and love God. Amen.
Scripture reference:
Psalm 127:3 — “Children are indeed a heritage from the LORD, and the fruit of the womb is His reward.”
Thanksgiving After the Birth of a Baby
Lord, here is our child, safe in our arms at last. Thank you for this new life, for the strength that brought them into the world, and for everyone who cared for us. Bless our baby with health and with a life full of your love. Help us, tired as we are, to be the parents this little one needs. Amen.
Scripture reference:
Luke 1:46–47 — Mary's song of praise: “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior!”
Prayer After Pregnancy Loss
Lord, our baby is gone, and the future we imagined has gone too. We are heartbroken. Some people do not know what to say, and some say nothing at all. But you knew our child, and our child was loved. Hold our little one in your peace. Hold us in our grief, and stay close to us in the days ahead. Amen.
Scripture reference:
Psalm 34:18 — “The LORD is near to the brokenhearted; He saves the contrite in spirit.”
Apart from the Hail Mary, the prayers on this page are original prayers written for the Piece of Holy Land Christian Prayer Library. Scripture quotations are taken from the Berean Standard Bible (BSB), which is in the public domain.
